Joseph Washington

Joseph Washington is a second year student at University of Nevada, Reno. This 20-year old young man is majoring in Human Development/Family Studies and expects to graduate in 2012.

In addition to a full academic load, Joseph also plays college football, which makes for a very demanding schedule. Balancing academics and sports has been a part of Joseph’s life since he was very young, so he’s had a lot of time to learn how to prioritize his busy schedule. Of course, having to do that without the help of his parents is, no doubt, a little more difficult. He says, “college is hard work and fun at the same time. You have to know how to balance your time because you can easily fall behind.” Sounds like this young man is on the right path to a successful college experience.

Joseph has been a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church since birth. He was an active participant in the Youth Choir and Youth Ministry for most of his life. He says, “Since I started school, it’s been hard finding a church because college football is very demanding and players rarely get free time. I have always had faith and I will never lose that, no matter how far I'm from my church home.” This young man is an example of how laying a solid Christian foundation in early life can keep one grounded into adulthood. His parents have honored the scripture “Train up a child in the that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

When asked if he had any advice for those coming after him, Joseph says, “the only thing I can tell future students is to be careful because you are on your own, and time management is very important.” That is certainly advice worth heeding.

Joseph’s long-term goals are to earn his degree and hopefully get a chance to play in the National Football League. This is a hard working, intelligent young man and we pray that God will allow him to fulfill his goals beyond anything he could ever imagine.

With so much negative news about young African-American males, Joseph is a ray of hope that all are not lost. We know that if God can do it for Joseph, he can also do it for others. Thank God for Joseph Washington and the awesome example he is setting for other young males.
