Our History

Emmanuel Baptist Church is located in the City of Stockton, California. The City has a population of approximately 315,000 people in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. The church was founded in April of 1926 by the late Rev. Henry Potts. The church is currently 95 years old, and in those 95 years, the church has only had five (5) pastors. The pastors have a long and solid history with the Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Community of Stockton.

         

The pastors are: Rev. Henry Potts 1926 – 1939 Deceased in office; Rev. John Henry Moore 1939 – 1952 Deceased in office; Rev. Joseph Solomon Sutton   1952 – 1959 Left for another Pastorate; Rev. Henry F. Dean 1960 – 1992 Deceased in office; Rev. Samuel Smith, Jr. 1994 – Present and Still serving the Lord and the People.

The membership is currently just above 800 members, with approximately 550 of them active. The church has a full ministry program,- Sunday School, New Members Orientation Class, Sunday Morning Worship, Brotherhood Union, Senior Women Auxiliary, Matrons, Jr. Mission, Youth Department, First Aid Department, Adult Ushers, Youth Ushers, Mid Week Worship, Prayer Meeting, Bible Study, Teachers Meeting, Fully Accredited Seminary, Youth Choir, Mass Choir, Men Chorus, Feeding Ministry, Bus Ministry, Vacation Bible School, Deacons, Jr. Deacons. and Deaconess. Emmanuel is a church where all are welcome, a ministry true to the biblical principles where the Holy Spirit is in charge of the Worship.
